The Surge Arresters with 11 kV to 10 kA are station class porcelain housed Arresters consist of a stack of Metal Oxide elements held rigidly by a tie rod with pressure release arrangements at both ends which consist of reverse acting diaphragms that rupture against a knife edged pressure release plate in the unlikely event of arrester failure. The rupture releases pressure build-up due to short circuit and causes the gases to be expelled through directional venting ports avoiding catastrophic failures.
