Any type of mechanical or thermal stress is not required in this process and for that the physical or chemical properties of the material do not get affected. It follows the Law of Faraday, i.e; the amount of material removed is proportional to the product of current intensity and active time. Theoretically, in electrochemical machines, besides the electric current, water is required but in practically the electrolyte salt needs to be filled due to the loss of electrolyte when removing sledge, and because the electrolyte remains on the removed workpieces.
